If you come from a business background, technical employees may seem very different and – according to some managers – even somewhat annoying. While the attitude that some technical employees have when complaining of the management staff’s decisions may seem like too much to handle at times, there is good reason for this type of behavior, and you and the company will actually stand more to gain by understanding technical employees, than not.
Technical employees are driven by a thirst of recognition and an attitude towards problem solving. Their main assets are their knowledge, ability to adapt to new problems, and ability to gain and assimilate new practical knowledge more quickly than other employees. Take for instance the development of a quality high end industrial hose, much needs to be implemented in the design aspect of the product for it to work properly.
Unfortunately for some managers, all this is a source of frustration and confusion, since technical employees want to be kept in the loop regarding company decisions that managers are responsible for, and they thrive on being taken seriously as experts. As a result, they are also less driven by direct monetary compensation, which would normally help you through most of the issues you have with the chain of command when dealing with business-oriented employees.
The best way to deal with technical employees is to offer them compensation in the form of training, opportunities to gain expert recognition, and greater insight into the company’s operation management. These currencies may actually cost you less than a raise, and they’ll get your technical employees to stop complaining. In fact, they’ll likely be more productive than ever!
